Information for Readers
What is Lobe Library?
Lobe Library is a new service and pilot project to offer digital talking books to our readers.
The service will be evaluated throughout the year. We will loan MP3-like players to interested readers loaded with a
digital audiobook. No cassettes, no CDs, just a portable player!
What do I do if I am interested?
Call or email your Reader’s Advisor! We will discuss the service with you, tell you about
the books available, and put you on the list for service!
What will you send me? How long can I keep it?
You will receive a handheld player called an Otis or a Muvo and the book will be on the player.
You will also receive instructions on using the Otis or Muvo. We will provide instructions in large print.
You can keep the player for 3 weeks, then you will need to mail it back to us.
Why are you offering this?
NLS has announced that they are working on offering digital talking books to talking book patrons in 2008.
As talking book centers, we think it is important to stay abreast of new technologies and begin
offering books in this format to interested readers. We will continue to look into new technologies and
delivery of books in new formats to provide high quality service to our readers.
What will I get in the mail when I sign up?
We are currently taking a list of names of individuals who would like to try the service.
When it is your turn, we will send you a package with an Otis or a Muvo handheld player, headphones,
instructions, an evaluation survey, and return postage and mailing stickers. When you are finished, mail
the player back to us, and be sure to fill out an evaluation survey so that we can assess your satisfaction!
Does it cost me anything?
There is no charge to use the player or for postage.
If I like it, can I get my own player and books?
Yes, if you like it, you can purchase a player from www.audible.com. There are a number of reader plans
you can sign up for. If you wish to borrow a book, you will need to borrow the library’s player.
Are other visually impaired people using this service?
The Audible program is for anyone interested in audiobooks, and there are a number of visually impaired readers
using and enjoying this service to supplement their use of talking books. There is even an electronic users group for
visually impaired users of the service. You can join by going to:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BlindAudibleListeners
